Objective: Mutual, low-friction resolution (structured remediation or reassignment)
Mode: Clarifying questions, timeline anchoring, forward-looking design
Red Lines: No blame, no admissions, no defensiveness
Step 1: Acknowledge (neutral, non-committal)
This disarms defensiveness. It is not agreement.
Examples:
- “I understand that.”
- “I hear what you’re saying.”
- “I appreciate that context.”
- “That makes sense as background.”
⚠️ Do not say “you’re right.”
Step 2: Anchor authority (remove yourself from the hot seat)
You explicitly relocate decision-making to process, policy, or mediator.
Examples:
- “From my perspective, this sits with the Intern Group’s assessment.”
- “I’m relying on the Intern Group to guide what’s appropriate here.”
- “I want to stay aligned with how the program is administered.”
- “This feels like something that needs to be clarified at the sponsor level.”
This is where gatekeeper energy enters. You are no longer the subject.
